Midland Dirt Masters - Coventry
Report By Ben Cosgrove
Team HBs arrived early on Saturday morning for the re scheduled MDM at the fantastic Coventry club. The track layout was different from the national which meant we missed out the top right hand loop section which was pretty blown out during the finals at the national. The track was very dry as we had a full week of hot weather beforehand which meant the track was very dusty and again different to what we had experienced before.
Ben Cosgrove was running the electric buggy class whereas Graham Alsop and John Holmes were running the nitro buggy class. We decided to split our tyre strategies on the Saturday so we could get some good data for Sunday for the finals. We all preferred slightly different combinations but we all ended up using the red compound. Ben used Gridlock and John used Multibyte with Graham trying Khaos and Blocks.
Electric Buggy went well for Ben with a perfect score saw the HPI Trophy Buggy Flux on pole for the A main, which was to be a 2 leg 15 minute each affair. The buggy worked very well again and is still showing how an RTR car can be used in serious competition against the ‘expensive’ opponents.
Nitro buggy saw Graham and John both TQing rounds and they were locked in a battle with Team Associateds Craig Drescher and Tony Truman. Graham ended up in third on the grid with John in fourth. The club decided to use 3 form 6 rounds of qualifying instead of the agreed 4 from 6 at the last minute meaning that Graham would have TQ'd if they had used 4 to count.
Electric buggy finals went very well for Ben having a controlled race in both legs to take the double victory and maximum honours. The nitro final was a race of attrition with John and Tony retiring due to technical issues leaving Graham and Craig to have an epic battle for the complete race! It was won by Craig with Graham under his rear wing as they crossed the line for the very last time.
It was a great weekend for the team with nearly a double victory and we really worked strong as a unit. The Coventry club ran a great meeting as always and the weather was sunny for a change. Full results will be available on the Coventry Model Car Clubs website soon. The focus is now on the upcoming Euros for Graham and electric national for Ben both in 2 weeks time.
